In 2015 seven veterans of the US Armed Forces and a National Geographic photographer launched a successful expedition to summit Denali, the tallest mountain in North America.
This mountaineering achievement was organized by Veterans Expeditions, a nonprofit organization dedicated to getting military veterans outside and teaching them outdoor skills.
A qualitative research study was conducted during the expedition, which explored the ways in which veterans' military identities related to their high alpine pursuits and their experience of small adventure group dynamics. This research was published in an edited volume, titled The Civilian Lives of U.S. Veterans: Issues and Identities.
Denali was the first summit I reached above 14,000 ft. The experience invigorated me to continue developing as a student of mountaineering.
